About SmartD Technologies
Founded in 2018, SmartD is seeking to disrupt the established century-old industry of electrical motor control. We are a Series A-funded team of innovators based in downtown Montreal, scaling a product that will save energy and be used by millions.
With strategic partners on board and a clear vision, we are focused on execution and bringing real value to our customers. If you are an expert in validating motor control performance, passionate about rigorously testing industrial automation, and want to work with a small, dedicated, and effective team, we invite you to join our mission.
The Impact of This Role
At SmartD, we value individual initiative and technical execution. As our Validation and Certification Engineer, you will be the key technical expert ensuring our Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) products meet global standards. You will:
- Drive Disruption: Lead the full certification lifecycle (cULus/cETLus and CE Mark), taking our disruptive technology from the lab to international markets.
- Enable Sustainability: Ensure our high-efficiency VFDs meet the most stringent safety and performance regulations (UL/IEC 61800-5-1), directly impacting the reliability of energy-saving solutions.
- Lead Technical Outcomes: Serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) during R&D design reviews, ensuring our architectures are “compliant by design” and ready for global deployment.
What You Bring
- Technical Expertise: * Strong understanding of VFD technology, power electronics, and motor control.
- Mastery of standards such as UL 61800-5-1 and the IEC/EN 61800 series.
- Proficiency with high-level testing gear: oscilloscopes, power analyzers, and grid emulators.
- Bonus: Familiarity with industrial protocols (MODBUS, BacNet) and multi-OS environments.
- Experience: * 3+ Years specifically leading cULus/CE certification projects for complex electrical products.
- Proven track record of direct interaction and negotiation with bodies like UL, CSA, or Intertek.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, or a related field.
- Language: Fluency in both French and English is required for this role (written and verbal).
- Mindset: An organized project manager who can work independently and navigate complex regulatory requirements without losing sight of the engineering goal.
Benefits & Work Environment
- Health & Security: Comprehensive coverage including Extended Health Care, Disability Insurance, and Life Insurance.
- Time Off: 4 weeks of paid vacation (PTO) from day one.
- Flexibility: A hybrid environment (approx. 80% office-lab / 20% home) with a focus on results.
- The Lab Advantage: We spend the majority of our time at our 425 rue Guy office. We believe hardware is a team sport; for this role specifically, being hands-on with our lab equipment is essential to driving our certification and testing success.
- Commute: Conveniently located a 10-minute walk from Lucien-L’Allier (Orange line) and with immediate access to bus lines 35, 36, and 71.
Our Hiring Process
We respect your time and maintain a transparent, 3-step process:
- Introductory Call (20 min): A general discussion via Google Meet to align on interest and fit.
- Technical Discussion (30 min): A technical deep-dive with the Department Head via Google Meet.
- On-Site Interview (1 hour): An in-depth technical meeting with your future colleagues and a tour of our lab.
