Daily Bread Food Bank works towards long-term solutions to hunger and runs innovative programs to support people on low incomes. Daily Bread distributes shelf-stable food, as well as fresh-cooked meals and provides support to over 129 member agencies and 205 food programs across Toronto, including food banks and meal programs for shelters and drop-ins. Daily Bread uses research and evidence to advocate for policy and systemic change.

Position: The Daily Bread Food Bank is making an open call for individuals to sit on the Board of Directors. Reporting to the Membership, the Board of Directors is the governing body of the organization. It sets the strategic direction, champions growth and mitigates risk to get there.

Compensation: This is a volunteer position. There is no compensation provided to any Board member. However, the organization has a robust policy to assist those with the living experience of poverty, with expenses related to completing their duties as a director.

The Board of Directors’ Responsibilities

  • Determining the mission and purpose of the organization.
  • Overseeing the selection, and performance of the CEO.
  • Ensuring the strategic planning process is thorough and complete, as well as the oversight of its implementation by Management.
  • Ensuring strong fiduciary oversight, risk mitigation, financial management and growth strategies.
  • Enhancing Daily Bread Food Bank’s public image.
  • Assessing the Boards own performance as the governing body of Daily Bread Food Bank.
  • Serve as an active advocate and ambassador for the organization and fully engage in identifying and securing financial resources and partnerships necessary for Daily Bread Food Bank to advance its mission.
  • Providing a personal financial donation that is within the individual Director’s means.
  • Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in person at board meetings.
  • Participate fully in one or more committees.

Qualifications

The Board of Directors the Daily Bread is looking for individuals who have:

  • A deep sense of purpose in Daily Bread’s mission.
  • Lived and living experience with poverty, and hunger-related issues is deeply appreciated.
  • Those with an existing relationship to the agencies we serve are encouraged to put their names forward for consideration.
  • The following skillsets are an asset:
  • Advocacy, policy development or government relations.
  • Board of Directors experience with a large non-profit.

Time Commitment

  • Eight Board Meetings annually with associated prep work. The Board typically meet on Wednesday evenings, 6:30-8:30 pm. While accommodation is met for virtual options, Board members are requested to attend meetings in person.
  • Three Years’ notice of meetings is provided to the Board of Directors.
  • Board Members must commit to a two-year term renewable maximum of up to four times.
  • Participation in a minimum of one Board Committee, meeting approximately eight times annually.
  • One Annual Board retreat, generally this is a Saturday in the month of April. This meeting is in person and may not have a virtual option available.
  • Optional and appreciated participation in volunteer, donor and public events.
