A North American manufacturing company is seeking a Customs Compliance Specialist to ensure the regulatory compliance of its cross-border trade operations. This operational and strategic role is key to maintaining adherence to import and export regulations in Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
Key Responsibilities:
Ensure compliance of import/export processes with the requirements of North American customs authorities.<br>Review trade and customs documentation, including tariff classification (HTS), product origin, customs valuation, and regulatory recordkeeping.<br>Develop and maintain internal compliance procedures, particularly regarding certificates of origin, ATA carnets, TIBs, and other customs programs.<br>Collaborate with internal teams (logistics, procurement, engineering, finance, etc.) to integrate customs requirements into business processes.<br>Provide ongoing training and support to internal stakeholders on regulatory standards and customs compliance best practices.<br>Review product nomenclatures and descriptions to ensure accurate tariff classifications and consistent data across systems.<br>Verify the accuracy of origin declarations and documents related to free trade agreements.<br>Contribute to the maintenance of product master data in the ERP system to ensure correct tariff codes and country of origin are applied to all items.<br>Ensure proper documentation compliance for certificates related to trade agreements such as CUSMA / USMCA / T-MEC.
The ideal candidate is a proactive, detail-oriented, and experienced professional with a strong background in North American customs compliance and a solid understanding of international trade principles. This individual will play a key role in ensuring regulatory compliance across cross-border operations in a dynamic manufacturing environment.<br>Required Skills and Qualifications:
Minimum of 5+ years of hands-on experience in Canadian, U.S., and Mexican customs brokerage and trade compliance.<br>Strong knowledge of core trade principles including tariff classification (HTS), customs valuation, export controls, trade sanctions, and preferential trade programs.<br>Proven experience developing, implementing, and maintaining customs compliance procedures, ideally within a manufacturing context.<br>Demonstrated ability to manage complex import/export compliance issues and provide practical, compliant solutions.<br>Proficient in reviewing BOMs (Bills of Materials) to support correct classification and customs valuation for duty and tax determination.<br>Solid understanding of rules of origin and trade agreements, including CUSMA, USMCA, and T-MEC, as well as experience working with certificates of origin (COO).<br>Familiarity with FDA import requirements into the U.S., particularly for industrial or technical products (e.g., lighting or electronics), is a strong asset.<br>Understanding of Buy American Act (BAA) compliance and its impact on sourcing and procurement strategies.<br>Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail and the ability to audit and improve compliance-related processes.<br>Ability to interpret and apply complex customs regulations, analyze trade data, and make informed decisions.<br>Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to work independently and adapt to shifting priorities.<br>Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to interact effectively with internal departments (e.g., purchasing, engineering, manufacturing, finance) and external stakeholders (e.g., customs brokers, government agencies).<br>Bilingual (English/French) is considered an asset.<br>Certifications such as Certified Customs Specialist (CCS) or Certified Trade Compliance Specialist (CTCS) are considered strong assets.<br>Willingness and ability to travel as needed.
