Position Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Health and Safety Coordinator to lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of our safety management systems across all projects and operations. This role is critical in ensuring compliance with provincial, federal, and company-specific safety regulations while fostering a proactive safety culture throughout the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Safety Program Leadership
- Develop and maintain the company’s Safety Management System in alignment with WorkSafeBC and other applicable regulations.
- Review and enforce the Vancouver Shotcrete Safety Manual across all projects.
- Lead Joint Occupational Health and Safety (JOHS) Committee activities and ensure outcomes are documented and implemented.
- Integrate Foreman Safety/Production (FSP) meeting outcomes into operational planning.
Compliance and Risk Management
- Conduct regular site inspections and audits, issuing reports and corrective actions.
- Monitor compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
- Lead or assist in investigations of incidents, near misses, and safety infractions.
- Coordinate regulatory reporting and maintain all required safety documentation.
Training and Development
- Develop and deliver safety training programs including orientation, task-specific, and refresher sessions.
- Maintain accurate training records and ensure certifications are current.
- Identify training needs and coordinate sessions with site leadership.
- Mentor and support Foremen and Superintendents in daily safety practices.
Site Support and Coordination
- Collaborate with Superintendents, Foremen, and Project Managers to embed safety into project planning and execution.
- Participate in site meetings to contribute hazard analysis and mitigation strategies.
- Review project start-up and de-mobilization plans for safety considerations.
- Provide guidance during equipment mobilization and hazardous work activities.
Daily, Weekly, Monthly & Quarterly Duties
- Conduct site visits to review hazard assessments and work conditions.
- Support crews with FLHAs, toolbox talks, and equipment inspections.
- Attend project and corporate meetings, JOHS and FSP sessions.
- Lead quarterly safety training days and company-wide safety meetings.
- Review safety reports, incident logs, and training updates.
- Contribute to employee appreciation events with a focus on safety recognition.
As-Needed Duties
- Assist with client and regulatory audits.
- Support recruitment and onboarding by communicating safety expectations.
- Represent the company in safety-related disputes or regulatory matters.
- Advise on equipment, tools, and materials to ensure safety compliance.
Key Competencies
- Strong knowledge of WorkSafeBC regulations and construction safety standards.
- Familiarity with Procore is an asset.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables and data extraction.
- Proven leadership in developing and enforcing a safety-first culture.
- Excellent communication, coaching, and training skills.
- Strong investigative skills with the ability to provide actionable recommendations.
- Proficiency in preparing and maintaining detailed safety documentation.
Reporting Structure
This position reports directly to the General Manager and works closely with:
- General Superintendent – for project-wide safety integration
- Foremen – for site-level safety enforcement
- Project Managers – for planning and resource allocation
