Senior Administrator, Payroll – Keyano College (North Eastern Alberta)

This is an excellent opportunity for a payroll professional who thrives in a collaborative, community-focused environment and is confident managing complex payroll operations, including unionized groups. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring accurate payroll processing, supporting continuous improvement initiatives, and serving as a knowledgeable resource within the People & Culture team.

Please note: This position is on-site. Candidates must be open to relocating to North Eastern Alberta (Fort McMurray region).

Key Responsibilities

Payroll Processing & Administration

  • Lead end-to-end semi-monthly payroll for unionized and non-union employee groups
  • Review and validate time entries, pay changes, and deductions
  • Prepare EFT deposits, ROEs, and statutory remittances (CRA, WCB)
  • Maintain accurate payroll records and ensure system integrity
  • Support year-end activities including T4/T4A reconciliation and reporting

Union Payroll & Compliance

  • Interpret and apply collective agreement provisions
  • Collaborate with HR and Labour Relations on leave, pay, and entitlement matters
  • Monitor regulatory changes and updates impacting payroll
  • Prepare detailed payroll and audit reports for Finance and leadership

Benefits & Pension Administration

  • Administer employee benefits, vacation, sick time, and leaves
  • Coordinate enrollment, terminations, and adjustments with benefit and pension providers
  • Reconcile benefit and pension deductions monthly
  • Support year-end pension reporting and audits
  • Provide guidance to employees on pension matters

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

  • Mentor and support the Payroll Administrator; act as backup
  • Partner with HR, Finance, and operational leaders
  • Identify opportunities to enhance payroll efficiency and accuracy
  • Maintain high confidentiality and a customer-focused approach

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of progressive payroll experience, including unionized environments
  • PCP designation required; PLP (or in progress) an asset
  • Post-secondary education in Accounting, Business Administration, or HR
  • Strong understanding of Canadian payroll legislation and CRA remittances
  • Experience with payroll systems (Avanti experience is a strong asset)
  • Advanced Excel skills and comfort with reconciliation reporting
  • Public sector or multi-site payroll experience is considered an asset
