Job Purpose

As a Construction Estimator for a general contractor, your primary responsibility is to assess project plans and specifications to determine material, labour, and equipment costs accurately. You’ll collaborate closely with senior estimator, management, project managers and clients to develop budgets that align with financial objectives while ensuring competitiveness in the bidding process. Additionally, you’ll analyze potential risks, propose value engineering solutions, and maintain positive client relationships.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts detailed analysis of contract documents (isometric, as-built, and engineering drawings) and specifications for large hard-bid / lump sum, construction management and small to medium design-build projects to determine overall project requirements (bonding, insurance, etc.).
  • Establishes a critical path schedule, including milestone dates and completion timelines to meet contract completion dates for large projects.
  • Manage and be responsible for the bid/proposal process, bid/proposal submission, pre-qualification process & package.
  • Thoroughly review bid/RFP invitations and public/private tender sites/forums, and clearly and accurately present information to Zgemi’s senior management to confirm bid/proposal intent.
  • Lead pricing for general expenses and project-specific requirements, completing detailed estimates and trade buy-out strategies for medium to large projects.
  • Assist in presenting estimates and proposals to clients, ensuring clear communication and understanding of project scopes and costs.
  • Ability to efficiently lead and mentor estimating team, promote a strong team concept and foster professional development.
  • Be highly self-motivated and directed; ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Build effective relationships with specialty contractors and suppliers that reflect and support Zgemi’s core values, which meet or exceed the customer’s expectations, manage tender processes, and maintain updated supplier lists.
  • Research industry trends, labour, and material costs, providing valuable project planning and budgeting insights.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation, including contracts, permits, drawings, and project reports, ensuring proper filing and version control.
  • Conduct risk and opportunity analysis, collaborating with senior management to mitigate risks and optimize project outcomes.
  • Coordinate with external consultants and project management organizations, liaising with clients to understand project requirements and develop tender strategies.
  • Continually refine estimating processes and practices, seeking creative solutions to enhance project efficiency and profitability.

Working Conditions

  • Office and on-site visits in a fast-paced environment with variable working hours depending on estimating requirements.
  • Handle multiple tasks simultaneously, juggling scheduling, budgeting, communication, and documentation management responsibilities.
  • Maintain composure and focus when handling high stress and pressure during closing.
  • Estimators must represent Zgemi professionally, follow safety protocols, wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations during site walkthroughs.

Qualifications and Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management, Engineering or equivalent is preferred
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience working in the Canadian construction field in similar or related position
  • Previous experience estimating projects
  • Ability to review and understand construction specifications, details drawings, construction plans and complete scope of work
  • Experience with estimating software and spreadsheet design
  • Proficient in Planswift is an asset
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Attention to detail and patience
