Description
Primary Purpose of the Role
Leads and manages a team of Medical Science Liaisons while also acting as a “player-coach,” holding responsibility for a specific therapeutic area or region. Develops and executes field medical strategy, builds scientific relationships, and oversees high-quality medical information exchange nationally.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Management
- Recruit, onboard, lead, and develop a team of MSLs.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, training, and performance reviews.
- Build a culture of:
- Scientific excellence
- Compliance
- Collaboration
- Manage a small to mid-sized team with both junior and senior MSLs.
Medical Strategy & Scientific Engagement
- Develop and implement the Medical Science Liaison strategy for assigned portfolios.
- Ensure alignment with broader therapeutic area objectives.
- Build and maintain scientific relationships with:
- Key opinion leaders
- Practice leaders
- Patient advocacy groups
- Oversee planning and delivery of medical information exchange.
Scientific Expertise & Cross-Functional Support
- Provide unbiased, accurate scientific information to healthcare professionals.
- Support safe and informed product use across disease areas.
- Deliver medical training and scientific input to internal teams (e.g., marketing, commercial, research).
- Remain current with emerging scientific and therapeutic trends.
Research & Collaboration
- Support evaluation of investigator-led studies and scientific collaborations.
- Identify therapeutic opportunities and trends in partnership with research and commercial colleagues.
- Guide strategies for scientific engagement with external stakeholders.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific or medical field (required).
- Higher degree preferred (e.g., MD, PharmD, PhD).
- Business experience/qualification is an asset.
Experience
- 8+ years in the pharmaceutical or biotherapeutics industry.
- Experience within relevant therapeutic areas.
- Clinical trial experience is an advantage.
- Demonstrated leadership/people management experience.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Ability to influence stakeholders beyond immediate team.
Skills
- Strong strategic and scientific communication skills.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement abilities.
- Ability to lead across varying levels of experience.
- Bilingualism (English/French) is beneficial.
