Description

Answer Precision Technologies (APT) designs and builds custom assembly automation systems, precision checking fixtures, and tooling. Our projects are highly engineered, one-off solutions — not catalog machines — and they require designers who enjoy thinking, problem-solving, and taking ownership.

This role is not about following templates. It’s about figuring things out and making good engineering decisions.

The Role

This is a senior, ownership-driven mechanical design role.

You will be responsible for the complete mechanical design of custom automation equipment — from concept through release and build support. You’ll work with minimal hand-holding, collaborate closely with other disciplines, and be trusted to make decisions that affect cost, performance, and schedule.

If you enjoy accountability, autonomy, and solving problems that don’t have obvious answers, you’ll thrive here.

What You’ll Own

  • Lead mechanical design of custom automation and tooling from early concept to final release
  • Develop SolidWorks models and manufacturing-ready drawings with minimal revision cycles
  • Select components, materials, finishes, and create accurate BOMs
  • Perform engineering calculations (forces, speeds, power, strength of materials, etc.)
  • Drive and defend design decisions during internal and customer design reviews
  • Identify and resolve design issues during manufacturing and quality checks
  • Manage engineering changes and support project schedules
  • Mentor junior designers by example and technical guidance
  • Communicate clearly with Manufacturing, Controls, Project Management, and customers
  • Travel to customer sites when required

What We Expect (Must-Have)

  • Strong, hands-on experience with SolidWorks in an automation or machine-design environment
  • Demonstrated experience designing assembly automation systems
  • Able to clearly explain design intent, tradeoffs, and decisions in spoken and written English
  • A self-directed, resourceful work style — you don’t wait to be told how to solve a problem
  • Comfortable making decisions with imperfect information and adjusting as needed
  • Able to manage your own priorities and meet commitments without constant oversight

Experience Level

  • Typically 7–10+ years in automation or machine design
  • Exceptional 5–7 year candidates with strong ownership experience are encouraged to apply

Nice to Have (Not Required)

  • CSWE certification
  • Hands-on build or shop exposure
  • Experience with pneumatics, hydraulics, servos, sensors, safety systems, and custom mechanisms
  • AutoCAD or SkyCAD experience

Who This Role Is Not For

  • Designers who prefer highly scripted work or detailed step-by-step direction
  • Candidates who mainly update existing designs without owning outcomes
  • Those uncomfortable presenting or defending their designs in reviews

(We include this section intentionally — it helps everyone decide faster.)

  • Real autonomy and trust in how work gets done
  • Supportive, approachable leadership
  • Strong team culture with high standards
  • A modern, well-equipped facility
  • Interesting, challenging automation projects that don’t feel repetitive

Requirements
