Position Summary:

Under the general direction of the Chief Administrative Officer, the Manager, ChemStore and Undergraduate Laboratory Operations provides services to Faculty and Students in the Department of Chemistry. The Manager is the first line safety officer in the Department, co-chairing the Department Health and Safety Committee and working with Environmental, Health and Safety Division (EH&S) in the University. This includes the safe use, handling and disposal of chemical materials as they enter and leave the building. This role works closely with the Associate chair of Undergraduate program and with UG-lab instructors and coordinators. The manager is responsible for coordinating the undergraduate laboratory requirements, including assigning technician support and overseeing chemical preparation. The Manager is responsible for purchasing and replenishing stocked chemicals and supplies in support of research and teaching, receiving of said supplies, including verification of condition and correct order, as well as filing the associated receipts. Maintaining good relations with suppliers and negotiating the best price for the Department.

Qualification Required:

Education:

  • Master’s degree in chemistry or equivalent combination of education and experience. Preference will be given to applicants with a PhD Degree.
  • Certification as a First Aid Responder, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certification under Transport Canada as a Shipper/Receiver.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a high volume student-focused chemical laboratory environment or Chemistry Department.
  • Experience in a managerial role in a unionized environment.
  • Experience and knowledge of health and safety legislation and processes.
  • Experience with various teaching methods and presentation techniques.
  • Experience overseeing the preparation of laboratories to ensure all undergraduate labs are running according to the experiment schedule.
  • Experience preparing solutions and chemicals for experiments.
  • Experience ordering chemicals and supplies based on knowledge of research usage and requirements, and forthcoming undergraduate experiments.
  • Experience developing business processes to increase productivity and to enhance the efficiency of services.
  • Experience in database management to maintain files of all chemicals in the Department.

Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
  • Advanced skills with computer programs such as Office 365 e.g. Word, Excel, purchasing software, web browsers and the procurement software U-Source.
  • Excellent decision-making skills, especially in crisis situations.

Other:

  • Ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment is essential.
  • Must be able to conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines through analytical and problem-solving capabilities
  • Project management, problem solving ability to formulate effective solutions while dealing with constraints
  • Ability to elicit cooperation from a wide variety of sources, including faculty, management, staff and students
  • Ability to anticipate resource shortages and proactively engage with stakeholders (academic and technical staff) to prevent crisis situations
