Our client is seeking a Senior Manager/Director, Project Design to lead a highly specialized project design function supporting custom architectural ceiling and wall systems.
This is a senior leadership opportunity for an experienced architectural design, engineering, or commercial construction professional who can lead multidisciplinary teams, improve design processes, support complex custom projects, and partner closely with Operations, Project Management, Estimating, Sales, Product Development, architects, designers, and key customers.
The Director, Project Design will play a critical role in ensuring that complex architectural concepts are translated into accurate, buildable, and production-ready shop drawings while supporting the continued growth of Decoustics’ custom product capabilities. The role oversees Senior Project Coordinators, Project Design Supervisors, and the Strongsville engineering design team, with responsibility for workload planning, technical review, team development, process improvement, and high-level project issue resolution.
The Opportunity
This is not simply a drafting or coordination leadership role. It is a strategic design leadership position at the intersection of architecture, engineering, manufacturing, project delivery, and customer collaboration.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to:
- Lead and develop a specialized design team supporting high-profile custom architectural projects
- Influence how complex custom ceiling, wall, wood, fiberglass, and metal systems are designed, documented, and delivered
- Build scalable processes, CAD standards, training systems, and workflow improvements
- Partner with senior internal stakeholders across Operations, Project Management, Estimating, Sales, and Product Development
- Support continued cross-functional growth between Decoustics and Strongsville
- Act as a senior technical escalation point for complex design, production, client, and supplier challenges
- Help shape a stronger, more flexible, and higher-performing project design function
Key Responsibilities
The Director, Project Design will:
- Provide leadership, coaching, mentorship, and performance management for a team of approximately 8–9 direct reports
- Oversee project assignment, scheduling, workload planning, and prioritization across multiple design teams
- Lead regular project status and resource planning meetings with Project Management, Operations, and senior stakeholders
- Ensure shop drawings, RFP support, technical documentation, and production-related design deliverables are completed accurately and on time
- Review and validate complex design work before release to internal teams, customers, suppliers, or external stakeholders
- Support architects, designers, customers, and internal teams with technical design inquiries and custom product solutions
- Resolve escalated project issues involving design intent, manufacturability, scheduling, customer expectations, suppliers, and production requirements
- Develop and improve CAD standards, design procedures, SOPs, training plans, and workflow systems
- Promote cross-training and resource flexibility between Decoustics and Strongsville design teams
- Manage external freelance design resources when required, including assignment, review, quality control, invoicing, and billing coordination
- Collaborate with Product Development on custom solutions and new product-related design requirements
- Drive continuous improvement in design quality, team effectiveness, documentation standards, and project execution
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will bring a strong blend of technical design expertise, architectural product knowledge, manufacturing awareness, and people leadership.
Required experience includes:
- Bachelor’s degree in Architectural Design or a related discipline
- Minimum 10 years of experience in commercial construction, architectural products, project design, engineering design, or a related technical environment
- Demonstrated success leading multidisciplinary design teams, ideally in a custom architectural, construction, manufacturing, or engineered products environment
- 10 – 15 years Demonstrate success in leading multidisciplinary design teams, conducting performance reviews, mentoring staff and drigving team development.
- Strong understanding of architectural drawings, construction documentation, shop drawings, production drawings, and design-for-manufacturing requirements
- Experience working with custom ceiling systems, wall systems, wood products, metal products, fiberglass products, suspension systems, or related architectural building products
- Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD, preferably version 2024 or later
- Strong ability to manage competing priorities, deadlines, internal stakeholders, and customer expectations
- Experience improving processes, standardizing design workflows, and developing technical teams
Preferred qualifications include:
- SolidWorks or similar 3D modelling experience
- SAP or ERP system experience
- Project management experience
- Familiarity with custom acoustic, ceiling, wall, or specialty architectural product systems
- Experience supporting multi-site or cross-border teams

Travel

This base range pays a competitive compensation ranging from $135,000 – $150,000.In addition to base salary, this position is elgible for an annual bonus targeted at 13% of base salary based on company and individual performance measures. a Full Benefits package, hybrid work environment, Tuition reimbursement, Wellness package is added and will be discussed during the recruitment process. The advertised salary range can range above and beyond depending on candidates experience and what they bring to this role.
