Role Description: Birchmont Consulting is seeking an experienced Accounting Specialist to support day-to-day accounting operations and monthly financial close for clients. This role is hands-on and execution-oriented, supporting client leadership by ensuring accurate records, disciplined processes, and reliable reporting.

This is not an entry-level bookkeeping/accounting role. We are looking for professionals who can operate independently in fast-moving small and mid-market environments. The Accounting Specialist is a full-time, on-site role based in GTA, ON. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing and posting journal entries, and ensuring timely reconciliation of accounts. The Accounting Specialist will support month-end and year-end closing processes, assist with the preparation and analysis of financial statements, and help manage accounts payable and receivable. They will work with various accounting software tools to process transactions, generate reports, and support internal and external audits as needed. The role also involves collaborating with finance and advisory teams to provide accurate financial data that supports client engagements and internal decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform full-cycle bookkeeping across multiple client entities
  • Record, classify, and maintain financial transactions with supporting documentation
  • Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, and bank reconciliations
  • Prepare and post journal entries, accruals, and adjustments
  • Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts and investigate variances
  • Maintain general ledger accuracy and chart of accounts discipline
  • Prepare management reports and financial schedules for CFOs, auditors, and lenders
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, HST/GST filings, and regulatory requirements
  • Improve bookkeeping workflows and data quality across systems
  • Travel weekly to client sites (Vaughan, Scarborough, and surrounding areas)
  • Attend the Mississauga office as required

Qualifications

Required

  • 3+ years of hands-on bookkeeping or accounting experience
  • Strong proficiency in QuickBooks (Online or Desktop) or similar systems
  • Must have a bachelor’s degree in finance, business or a related discipline
  • Experience supporting monthly financial close processes
  • Solid understanding of accrual accounting and financial statements
  • Strong attention to detail and reconciliation skills
  • Ability to work independently at client sites
  • Strong organizational and documentation discipline
  • High integrity with a strong sense of ownership
  • Comfortable working with business owners, CFOs, and senior stakeholders
  • Ability to perform under tight deadlines
  • Must reside in the GTA and be legally authorized to work in Canada

Preferred

  • Diploma or degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business
  • Experience with small and mid-market companies
  • Exposure to multi-entity or multi-location accounting
  • Experience working with external accountants, auditors, or lenders
