Description
Location: Ontario, Quebec – Remote
Salary Range: $100,000 – $130,000 CAD Annually
Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Unreal Artist to join our team. At Mavericks VFX we’ve pioneered the use of Unreal Engine throughout our Visual Effects pipeline from Pre-Viz to final pixels on screen.
In addition to real-time “Volume” based Virtual Art Direction, we’ve production-proven the use of path-traced Unreal renders as an alternative to more traditional CG rendering. This allows us to provide our clients with compelling Pre-Viz in Unreal; iterate, then polish, light, and render photo-real imagery all from one DCC.
Working with Unreal from start-to-finish like this both on-stage and offline gives us the added benefit of building on our up-front investment in the Pre-Viz work, polishing it into suitable fidelity for final pixels to screen without the need to throw anything out.
But this approach – using Unreal as an “offline” (non-realtime) renderer within a larger Visual Effects pipeline – introduces its own unique challenges. We’re looking for the right candidate to help us meet those challenges.
Job Responsibilities
- Develop, iterate, and refine Pre-Viz content in Unreal Engine through to final pixel delivery.
- Utilize Unreal Engine’s path-traced rendering capabilities as an alternative to traditional CG renderers.
- Support real-time, volume-based Virtual Art Direction workflows as well as offline rendering pipelines.
- Optimize assets, lighting, materials, and scenes for both real-time performance and high-quality final renders.
- Collaborate closely with VFX Supervisors, Artists, and Technical teams to ensure creative intent is maintained throughout production.
- Build upon Pre-Viz assets to achieve final-shot fidelity without redundant rework.
- Identify and solve technical challenges associated with using Unreal as an offline renderer within a VFX pipeline.
- Ensure work meets production standards, schedules, and quality expectations.
- Troubleshoot rendering, performance, and pipeline issues efficiently under tight deadlines.
Qualifications and Essential Skills
- Experience developing photo-real environments in Unreal Engine.
- A keen eye for cinematic lighting.
- Flexible asset modeling, texturing, and material development.
- Experience working with the Movie Render Queue with particular attention to AOV output.
- Extensive knowledge of Unreal path-tracing, Lumen Global Illumination and reflections.
- Experience working with imported cameras and plates in Unreal.
- Experience working in the Visual Effects Industry.
- Time spent working on and for real-time LED stages.
- Knowledge of farm and/or cloud-based rendering and the Deadline API.
- Metahuman development.
- Experience with Adobe’s Flow Production Software (AKA Shotgun, Shotgrid).
