About the role<br/><br/>Weekly hours may fluctuate depending on business needs. The In‑House Legal CounselII role focuses on providing legal support to the Legal Claims team, managing casualty, property and accident benefits disputes, and helping Intact achieve indemnity and expense control goals.
Responsibilities<br/><br/>Help Intact achieve strategic goals related to indemnity and expense control.
Handle a variety of insurance defence files, including property, casualty and accident benefits disputes from beginning to end.
Draft opinions, pleadings, affidavits and other legal documents to support applications, mediations, judicial settlement conferences and trials.
Independently prepare and conduct applications, discoveries, mediations, arbitration, pre‑trial conferences and trials.
Assess claims with a focus on controlling indemnity while being pragmatic for proactive and efficient resolution.
Share knowledge and coach Intact colleagues both inside and outside your department.
Qualifications<br/><br/>Strong organization, communication and negotiation skills to manage a busy practice and work effectively with legal support staff.
Strong interpersonal skills, natural ability to work collaboratively and build client relationships.
Ability to think outside the box, find novel solutions and be a pragmatic problem solver.
A member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
Minimum of 5+ years of insurance litigation experience.
Experience in legal research and writing, including authorship of legal opinions.
Experience drafting pleadings, conducting discoveries, mediations, application documents and pre‑hearing memoranda.
Proficiency in alternative dispute resolution (ADR) processes.
Trial experience, particularly independent trial experience, is a definite asset.
Proficiency in technologies, tools, and software programs to optimize operational efficiency and decision making (e.g., AI tools, iManage, ACL, Microsoft Office).
