Reporting directly to the Senior Finance Manager for North America, the Financial Controller of Canada is responsible for forecasting, establishing an effective financial control environment, and maintaining the quality and integrity of financial reporting and month‑end closing.<br/><br/>As an integral part of the North American finance team, the appointee will be responsible for all financial control matters in the Canada region. This position has three direct reports.<br/><br/>KEY FOCUS AREAS:<br/><br/>Close and effective communication with the Operational leadership to provide value added financial insights on business strategy, quality forecasting, and communication of the business trends to regional leadership.<br/><br/>Maintain the quality and integrity of the financial reporting processes through to ensure timely production of the reported results.<br/><br/>Deliver an effective financial control environment, with specific focus on the operational financial processes to ensure quality and continuity of the processes, with a specific focus on the timeliness of site information and the accuracy of the P&L.<br/><br/>Assist driving innovation in finance processes, support automation of core processes and development of finance systems to provide accurate and timely financial insight to the leadership team.<br/><br/>RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:<br/><br/>Business Partner:<br/><br/>Defines key performance indicators per business unit financial activities and assists in developing and attaining operational targets. Follow up and report on the implementation of KPIs, analysing trends and variance against target.<br/><br/>Assists the sales and operations group in the development of cost estimates of new products or services.<br/><br/>Analyses cost information for use in controlling expenditures. Communicates potential cost issues with operations management.<br/><br/>Provides management with reports specifying and comparing factors affecting prices and profitability of products or services.<br/><br/>Assists site management/operations with reviewing monthly financial statements.<br/><br/>Supervisory:<br/><br/>Direct and manage the day‑to‑day activities of the administrative team, which includes the following areas: general accounting, order to cash, accounts payable, inventory, fixed assets, payroll, sales/use and property taxes.<br/><br/>Manage transaction accounting, SOX, the closing process and other financial controls.<br/><br/>Manage all the monthly closing duties of direct reports to ensure financial statements are accurate and complete in accordance with US GAAP.<br/><br/>Work with the Finance Director to ensure clean and timely internal and external audits.<br/><br/>Establish, monitor and enforce internal controls.<br/><br/>Maintains a highly skilled staff by coaching and counseling employees. Plan, monitor and appraise their performance.<br/><br/>Coach and mentor the site administrative assistants to drive quality in the financial processes impacting revenues and expenses.<br/><br/>Financial Planning & Analysis:<br/><br/>Compiles cost information to be used in the operating budget preparation. The controller works directly with the commercial, operations and asset management group to develop the annual plan and quarterly forecast. Update Hyperion Planning with the latest forecast/plan information.<br/><br/>Provide weekly financial projections utilizing the internal forecasting tool.<br/><br/>Manage the development of standard costs for the manufacturing sites. Plans, studies and collects data to determine costs of business activity such as raw material purchases, inventory and labour.<br/><br/>Analyzes actual manufacturing costs and prepares periodic reports comparing standard costs to actual production costs.<br/><br/>Provide ad hoc financial analysis as requested by operations and finance management.<br/><br/>Provide regular updates on the projection of capital expenditures.<br/><br/>Understand site service contracts in place and review annual price escalation clauses annually if applicable.<br/><br/>Optimise working capital by engaging with the team to manage inventory levels, and accurately forecast accounts receivable.<br/><br/>Act as the gatekeeper for asset transfers, disposals and authorisations for capital investments.<br/><br/>Month End Reporting:<br/><br/>Participates in month‑end closing procedures by ensuring accurate accounting of all revenue and cost in the month, reviewing site financials to detect any discrepancies and anomalies, and prepares detailed comments of the month results in sales and costs comparing actual numbers with Plan & latest forecast financials by business unit activity.<br/><br/>Analyzes compliance reports and identifies areas of improvement.<br/><br/>Help to identify and resolve technical US GAAP and other accounting related issues as they arise.<br/><br/>Identify process or cost issues and assist operations in the development of a remediation plan.<br/><br/>Prepare bridges detailing the nature of variances against projections and provide margin analysis.<br/><br/>Financial Controls:<br/><br/>Support the integrity of the financial results through rigorous review of the site P&L, ensuring the effectiveness of the site’s internal controls.<br/><br/>Maintain a thorough understanding and documentation of financial controls that drive revenues and expenses. Ensure appropriate financial control processes are in place across the sites.<br/><br/>Maintain a thorough understanding of customer contracts and the respective billing mechanisms to ensure all revenues are captured timely and accurately.<br/><br/>Quarterly spare parts physical inventories and bulk raw material and finished goods surveys.<br/><br/>Other:<br/><br/>Drive continuous improvement across all financial control and financial accounting activities, such as reporting processes, Excel‑based models, development of systems and optimisation of transactional activities in collaboration with the business and regional leadership.<br/><br/>Develop innovative solutions to meet the required outputs more efficiently, and therefore improve the effectiveness of controls and support provided to the operational teams.<br/><br/>Take the lead in ad hoc projects as required.<br/><br/>Will be some travel as needed between Quebec and Ontario sites and potential trip to Pittsburgh.<br/><br/>Qualifications<br/><br/>Bachelor’s degree from a four‑year college or university in accounting or finance.<br/><br/>Certified Public Accountant (preferred).<br/><br/>Financial Planning and Analysis experience.<br/><br/>Manufacturing or similar industry experience.<br/><br/>In‑depth financial controls knowledge.<br/><br/>Advanced Excel skills.<br/><br/>Experience with large‑company ERP systems (e.g. Oracle, SAP, etc.).<br/><br/>Influencing / negotiating skills.<br/><br/>Customer care.<br/><br/>Attention to detail.<br/><br/>Team work – forms strong work relationships.<br/><br/>Highly organised – ability to deliver against tight deadlines.<br/><br/>Effective verbal & written communication in French and English.<br/><br/>Additional Information
