The Role

As a 3D Modelling & Resource Geologist at Orix who is a self-starter with the capacity to make decisions, you are passionate about rocks and data, bringing desktop compilation skills (Arc GIS) and 3D modelling (Datamine, Leapfrog) to teams, field exploration management (drill programs/mapping), working collaboratively within our Geology and Geomatics departments in both the field and office, to empower teams and meet our clients milestones. You will bring diverse and demonstrated leadership and contribute to respectful and healthy work environments.

Qualifications & Technical Skills

  • University Degree B.Sc. Geology (or equivalent);
  • Registered as a P.Geo (PGO, EGM, OGQ or other provincial body);
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the mining and exploration industry, with a strong understanding of the operational needs and expectations of geologists supporting active mining projects;

Critical Technical Skill:

  • Advanced skills in 3D modelling primarily using Datamine Studio. Intermediate skills or greater in Leapfrog are a definite asset.

Additional Technical Skills:

  • Strong technical background in geology, including interpreting drilling data, lithology, structure, and assay results;
  • Demonstrated experience working in a mining environment (underground or open pit), with familiarity of mine geology workflows, production support, and reconciliation;
  • Experience preparing and maintaining geological models to support short- and long-range mine planning;
  • Understanding of industry best practices and QA/QC procedures for geological data;
  • Effective communicator with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams and present technical information clearly;
  • Self-directed and organized, with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines;
  • Experience with underground mining and mineral resource estimation an asset

Key Responsibilities

As a key member of Orix, you will work with cross-functional teams and lead both field and desktop projects, with a drive to contribute in any capacity to get the job done and create positive business outcomes! You will be responsible for delivering high-quality work while building strong relationships with clients and integrating responsible and conscientious practices (H&S, ESG). As a 3D Modelling & Resource Geologist, you will be accountable to your tasks and projects as an individual contributor and by demonstrating strategic and inclusive communication, empowering teams to think innovatively and strive for technical excellence. You will participate to understand client objectives and work through risks and opportunities, to design and implement impactful workplans, leaving room for collaborative discussion and innovating solutions, helping to cultivate engaged and high performing teams and contribute to successful project outcomes.

This role is envisioned to be mostly desktop support work but a field component to the work may be necessary at times and should be limited to short field site visits.

Desktop Work

  • Use of 3D platforms (Datamine, Leapfrog) in the development of geological models and historical mining models;
  • Project Management, leadership, and teamwork including supervising and/or supporting other geology, geotechnical and geomatic professionals as well as field personnel;
  • Review, organize, and integrate historical and current geological data;
  • Compile public and proprietary datasets within 2D (ArcGIS, QGIS) and 3D (Leapfrog, Datamine) compilations;
  • Digital transformation and QAQC of historical drill logs, analytical data, and maps (digitizing and data entry);
  • Manage and conduct the writing of assessment and technical reports;
  • Interpret geological data (surface and/or underground plans/sections) including lithology, structure, alteration, veins, and mineralization;
  • Target generation;

Field Work

  • Support and manage drill and mapping projects. Ground truthing, prospecting, mapping, targeting, core logging and sampling;
  • Planning and tracking drilling;
  • Contribute, integrate and ensure the adherence to responsible practices; H&S SOP/ERP, stakeholder engagement, etc.;
  • Leadership and team building including supporting and/or supervising geology, geotechnical and geomatic professionals; internal to Orix, clients, or contractors;

Other Duties

  • Manage client relationships, project timelines/budgets, logistics/scheduling, and provide project updates as a primary point of contact for projects as agreed upon and needed;
  • Take ownership of project objectives and outcomes;
  • Be an ambassador of Orix; Provide leadership and team building including serving as a model for others both for quality of work as well as workplace culture, linking strategic objectives to everyday work and projects, and supporting and/or supervising geology, geotechnical and geomatic professionals; internal to Orix, clients, or contractors;
  • Identify and pursue new and continued work opportunities with current and prospective clients;
  • Provide inclusive leadership and supervision to team members as a Team Lead and/or Supervisor as appropriate, ensuring Orix Values (O-Code) are being lived daily;
  • Ongoing team collaboration with cross-functional teams and accountability to projects in a dynamic environment, including communicating findings and updates;
  • Participate in internal committee(s) as mutually agreed upon (operational efficiencies, technical services, JHSC, etc.).
