With a history of more than 50 years, the Maritime Employers Association (MEA) is responsible for the recruitment, training, and the daily deployment of qualified labour across four ports in Eastern Canada, namely the Ports of Montreal, Trois-Rivières/Bécancour, Hamilton, and Toronto.

The MEA also has the mandate to negotiate and administer the collective bargaining agreements of its member companies, which include the shipping line operators as well as the stowage companies. The MEA acts as a health & safety expert-advisor for terminal operators.

Reporting to the Team Leader of Industrial Relations, this position will actively participate in strengthening and maintaining the occupational health and safety culture. On a day-to-day basis, he/she will be responsible for implementing prevention activities, participating in local occupational health and safety committees, and advising stakeholders on occupational health and safety (OHS) standards, programs and procedures and assisting with the WSIB return to work process.

Responsibilities:

Consulting Role:

  • Propose and develop best practice in health, safety and wellness
  • Foster a unifying vision and promote occupational health and safety in a joint manner
  • Help employers meet their obligations under federal OHS regulations
  • Participate in the local health and safety committees of member companies
  • To make recommendations and provide solutions to ensure regulatory compliance by member companies.

Prevention Activities:

  • Coordinate various industrial hygiene, hazard analysis and ergonomic projects
  • Participate in the development, implementation, evaluation and revision of health and safety programs, policies and procedures

Training:

  • Develop or revise OHS training content
  • Conduct training sessions

Data Management and Analysis:

  • Analyze and track accident trends
  • Participate in accident investigations
  • Participate in the development of an annual prevention action plan.

Job Requirements :

  • University degree in health and safety, human resources, industrial relations or any other relevant training
  • Minimum of 5 years in similar position
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite
  • Car and a valid driver’s license for work-related travel

Assets :

  • Experience in industrial hygiene
  • Experience in a unionized environment
  • Knowledge of the Canada Labour Code

Workplace : The main office is located at 208 Hillyard St., Hamilton, Ontario. The candidate must be able to travel to the workplace within a reasonable time frame to meet the operational requirements of the position.

Pay Scale : The average salary range for this full-time position is $68187 to $90915 annually. The salary range for the selected candidate will be calculated based on previous experience, educational background, and assets met.
