The Opportunity

This role resides within the Finance & Corporate Services (FCS) department of Fidelity Investments. The Finance department provides various services across the organization including strategy support, executive and business unit finance support, business analytics, financial planning and analysis, and corporate accounting and taxation.

This position will join the Fidelity Leadership Team and reports to the Vice-President, Corporate Finance. Fidelity Canada is seeking a seasoned tax professional with a demonstrated track record of leading the corporate tax function within a mid to large size organization. This leader will have a proven track record in managing tax compliance, remaining current on industry and relevant statutory changes, providing concise tax analysis and guidance to senior executives, coupled with strong team building skills.

What You’ll Do

Tax Management & Compliance

  • Lead team in the preparation, review, and oversight of corporate and indirect tax returns and ensure they are filed by required due dates
  • Oversee the preparation of corporate tax provisions and ensure review and sign-off from internal and external stakeholders is smooth and meets expectations
  • Lead the coordination and oversight of tax audits and reviews and manage the preparation, review, and submission of all formal responses to audit queries

Tax Advisory & Support

  • Work with internal and external partners to facilitate, expedite and complete special projects or research on issues or other tax matters in a timely and effective manner
  • Act as the internal resource for tax related matters arising from other business units across Fidelity Canada such as, Client Services, Fund Treasury, Product, among others

Tax Knowledge & Relationships

  • Develop and maintain a network of contacts inside and outside Fidelity to ensure the tax aspects of business strategies and industry developments are well understood
  • Keep abreast of new developments and issues affecting the asset management industry and manage communication and implementation of changes to the corporate tax reporting processes
  • Cultivate a strong relationship with our colleagues in foreign jurisdictions

Lead and Develop Staff

  • Provide leadership to help improve efficiency, risk mitigation, professionalism and staff engagement
  • Set challenging goals and work standards
  • Effectively communicate goals and priorities through regular feedback
  • Conduct regular coaching sessions with employees, providing direction and feedback, actively manage performance, and proactively address performance concerns
  • Engage employees in development conversations and provide support. towards their development goals, with a focus on continuous learning and upskilling
  • Work with HR Business Partners to develop talent management strategies to attract and retain talent

What We’re Looking For

  • 8-10 years of progressive experience in corporate taxation
  • Experience in mutual fund or financial services industry an asset
  • Bachelor’s degree with a concentration within accounting and finance or equivalent work experience
  • Post-secondary education in the areas of Sustainability, Finance, Engineering, Business or related fields are preferred
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) is a requirement
  • CICA In-depth Tax Course, Completion of CPA Canada In-Depth Tax Courses Level 1 & 2.

  • Excellent communication skills with ability to translate complicated concepts into business terminology and ability to effectively make presentations to diverse internal audiences.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills
  • Solid understanding of IFRS tax accounting standards.
  • In-depth knowledge of income tax legislation and practices with respect to a variety of different types of corporate and other taxes.
  • Excellent PC skills required (Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
