PPM Civil Constructors, ULC (PPMCC) is a general marine contractor servicing clients in British Columbia. We specialize in complex construction, have experience in varying modes of project delivery, and excel at working in remote locations and harsh environments. We build marine infrastructure which includes docks, wharves, jetties, breakwaters, outfalls, intakes, and floats. We dredge and perform underwater material placement and excel in environmental dredging and cover placement. PPMCC is the Canadian subsidiary of Pacific Pile & Marine (PPM) who are an American general marine contractor. PPMCC and PPM are highly integrated and PPMCC has the benefit of the full support of the parent company PPM. Collectively we have projects throughout North American supported by regional offices in British Columbia (Nanaimo), Alaska (Anchorage), and the corporate office in Seattle, Washington. Together, PPMCC and PPM serve clients throughout Washington, Oregon, California, Montana, Alaska, British Columbia, Mexico, and even Antarctica.
Position Summary
Intermediate Estimators accurately estimate the cost, time, materials, labor, and equipment required for a construction project. They perform cost analyses, determine the duration of a project, procure vendors and subcontractors, and ensure that resources are managed, and deadlines are met.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Support Chief Estimator and the estimating department during bidding activities.
- Conduct initial analysis of drawings and specifications to ensure required documentation is present and determine scope of work.
- Develop full‐scope estimates based on Bid‐Build, Design‐Build or CM/GC construction documents.
- Critically analyze bid documents and understand risk and opportunities and articulate those to management.
- Formulating contingency plans and effectively managing risks that might impact cost and time estimates.
- Create detailed crew and production cost estimates and review prices with estimating team.
- Conduct material quantity take‐offs for accurate project estimation.
- Assist in the collection and recording of historical data. Utilize historical data to assist in accurate estimating.
- Communicate with superintendents to identify project needs.
- Participate in technical proposals for Alternative Delivery projects.
- Performs technical/plan review when required.
- Preparing estimates to meet project goals, such as setting work hours, sequencing tasks, obtaining materials, and securing the best deals with vendors and subcontractors.
- Ensuring that relevant documents and budgets are submitted before a bid deadline.
- Regularly reporting to Management and keeping clients updated on the project status.
- Keeping track of the latest estimating technology and industry‐related techniques.
- Collaborating with other teams, conducting site visits, and providing other services, like bid deliveries, when required.
Position Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or an equivalent degree.
- Strong organizational skills and must be able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Strong communication skills both written and oral.
- Ability to meet demands in a face paced environment.
- Effective procurement skills for supplier and subcontractor quote acquisitions.
- Must demonstrate strong critical thinking skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to adapt to changing needs in the workplace.
- Extensive experience as an Estimator in the construction field.
- Ability to closely collaborate with other project teams and stakeholders.
- Strong technical writing skills and proposal experience.
- Extensive knowledge of best industry practices and standards.
- Advanced computer skill and demonstrable competency in Microsoft Office and PDF software. AutoCAD an asset but not required.
- Ability to travel and perform site visits.
- Ability to lead and manage large estimate pursuits.
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record required to operate company vehicles.
- Drug and Alcohol Testing may be a project specific requirement.
