Laboratory Technician, Seed Operations

Location: Lethbridge County, AB

Schedule: 40 hours per week + optional overtime (OT), occasional Saturdays

Pay: $23.00/hour starting wage + shift premiums ($2.00/hr 10pm–6am, $3.00/hr 4pm–10pm)

About the Role

We are seeking a Laboratory Technician to join our seed operations team. This role involves processing treated seed samples on the plant floor, supporting quality assurance, and assisting with seed handling and warehouse operations. Full training will be provided, but prior experience with seed processing, QA, or sampling is an asset.

You must be comfortable using computers (Excel, Outlook) and working in a fast-paced industrial environment with rotating shifts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process and analyze treated seed samples
  • Perform tasks associated with harvest, conditioning, treating, packaging, warehousing, and shipping
  • Operate forklifts safely for shipping/receiving and seed movement (training available if no prior experience)
  • Maintain accurate records (quality, safety, inventory, etc.)
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols and quality plans

  • September–October: Receive, weigh, and unload seed trucks; process and treat seed; supply conditioning lines
  • November–March: Label, tag, bag, and palletize seed; enter inventory data; stage seed for shipping
  • April–August: Retag and re-bag seed, inspect and wash pro boxes, manage returned seed

Schedule & Shifts

  • Day Shift: 7:00 am – 3:30 pm
  • Evening Shift: 3:00 pm – 11:30 pm
  • Rotating every 2 weeks (must be available for both)
  • Overtime and weekend work may be required during peak seasons

Required:

  • High School Diploma (mandatory for permanent opportunities)
  • Computer literacy (Excel, Outlook)
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform repetitive motions
  • Willingness to work in hot, cold, wet, dry, and dusty environments
  • Excellent communication, accuracy, and reliability

Preferred:

  • Two-year diploma in Agriculture or related field
  • Experience in manufacturing, warehouse operations, or seed handling
  • Forklift experience (or willingness to learn)
  • Knowledge of production agriculture

Working Conditions

  • Exposure to dust and seed treatment chemicals
  • Indoor/outdoor work in varying weather conditions
  • Standing, sitting, climbing, and working in elevated areas for extended periods

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Employees are expected to wear:

  • Leather gloves
  • CSA-approved safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toe boots (green CSA triangle, ankle coverage)
  • Hi-viz safety vest & long sleeves when handling treated seed
  • Hard hat (supplied, Class E rating)
  • Additional specialty PPE provided as required
