Description

We are seeking an experienced Geotechnical Laboratory Supervisor to lead our laboratory operations in Markham, Ontario. This role requires a seasoned professional with strong leadership skills and hands-on experience in geotechnical and materials testing. Candidates without prior supervisory experience will not be considered.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform geotechnical and materials laboratory testing.

• Supervise laboratory technicians and subcontractors in daily operations.

• Oversee QA and QC procedures, equipment calibrations, proficiency sampling, and annual inspections.

• Maintain SPCL procedures, documentation, certifications, testing protocols, and supply management.

• Conduct testing on soil, rock, aggregate, asphalt, concrete, and other construction materials in accordance with ASTM, ASHTO, CCIL, and other relevant standards.

• Ensure adherence to testing protocols and standard methods across the team.

• Communicate effectively with clients and the Operations Manager to support smooth project execution.

• Assist with scheduling, resource planning, and time sheet oversight to meet project turnaround requirements.

• Support the maintenance of budgets, invoicing, accounts payable and receivable for laboratory and field services.

• Maintain accurate sample logs for concrete cylinders, aggregate, and soil samples.

• Routinely inspect laboratory areas to ensure proper equipment maintenance and a safe work environment.

• Record test data and prepare factual reports, summaries, data sheets, and graphs.

• Oversee quality of work produced by laboratory technicians including data verification and process audits.

• Maintain databases containing calibration certificates, registration documents, equipment manuals, and standards.

• Participate in laboratory correlation and accreditation assessment programs.

• Train and mentor laboratory technologists and technicians.

• Recommend actions to improve workplace safety.

• Travel occasionally for short field assignments.

• Monitor workload and adjust operations or staffing to maintain laboratory productivity.

• Prepare proposals, liaise with clients, and support business development initiatives.

• Provide coaching and mentorship to less experienced professionals.

Qualifications:

• Proven experience in geotechnical laboratory supervision is required.

• Strong understanding of geotechnical and materials testing standards and procedures.

• Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.

• Ability to manage operations, staff, budget, and client relationships effectively.
