Senior Excel SME (Macros & Performance Optimization)

Overview

We are seeking a hands-on Excel Subject Matter Expert to evaluate, troubleshoot, and improve the performance of a complex, macro-driven Excel environment used by an operational business team.

The current solution consists of multiple large, interdependent workbooks with embedded macros that are experiencing significant performance degradation, with processes taking several minutes to complete.

  • This role will act as a consultative SME, responsible for:Assessing the current build
  • Diagnosing root causes of performance issues
  • Stabilizing and optimizing the existing solution
  • Recommending modernization opportunities (including Power Automate or alternative approaches)

This position requires both deep technical troubleshooting skills and the ability to recommend better long-term solutions, not just short-term fixes.

  • Key ResponsibilitiesEvaluate a large, multi-workbook Excel ecosystem with heavy macro usage
  • Diagnose slow performance, long processing times, and instability
  • Debug and optimize macro-driven processes
  • Identify root causes related to Excel configuration, Windows environment, or file architecture
  • Refactor inefficient formulas, links, and logic
  • Improve reliability, speed, and maintainability of current tools
  • Recommend modernization strategies and alternative approaches where appropriate
  • Design or prototype improvements using newer automation tools (e.g., Power Automate)
  • Document findings, provide best practices, and support knowledge transfer
  • Partner with business users to balance quick fixes with long-term improvements

  • Required Skills & Experience5+ years of advanced Microsoft Excel expertise in complex enterprise environments
  • Strong experience with:
  • Macros
  • VBA-based logic
  • Large datasets and linked workbooks
  • Performance troubleshooting and optimization
  • Proven experience debugging and improving legacy Excel solutions
  • Experience diagnosing system/environment-related issues (Excel settings, Windows differences, updates, etc.)
  • Ability to independently assess, recommend, and implement improvements
  • Strong consultative and stakeholder communication skills

  • Nice to HaveExperience with Microsoft Power Automate or modern workflow automation tools
  • Experience migrating Excel-based processes to more scalable solutions
  • Power Query or data transformation experience
  • Scripting or automation background (PowerShell or similar)
  • Prior consulting or advisory experience
