Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced and dynamic National Logistics Manager to lead our transportation operations, for the utility pole business, across Canada. This role involves up to 50% travel and reports directly to the Director of Transportation & Logistics.
The National Logistics Manager ensures the safe, efficient, and cost-effective movement of products via truck and rail, with responsibility for both strategy and execution. The position supervises a small, high-performing team and partners with plant managers, carriers, and drivers across the country. This is a high-impact role, offering national exposure and opportunities to shape logistics practices for over 140 locations.
The position may be based at one of the following Canadian locations:
- New Westminster, BC
- Carseland, AB
- Gormley or Shelburne, ON
- Montréal or Delson, QC
Key Responsibilities
- Ensures transportation availability for all logistical needs;
- Transportation emergency storm response lead; availability in evenings or weekends as required for emergencies
- Manages all freight claims as it relates to truck transportation;
- Reviews third party performance, carrier sourcing, and performance optimization;
- Participates in business development strategies, capital projects and special projects;
- Enforces compliance with administrative policies, procedures, safety rules, governmental regulations and contract compliance;
- Contributes to company transportation decisions; exploits cost-saving opportunities for logistics;
- Negotiates and publishes transportation rates of third-party carriers;
- Develops, implements, and monitors third party carrier rates;
- Knowledge of all company safety, Department of Transportation (DOT), CNESST, and Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA) programs;
- Develops a close working relationship with all carriers and a has a thorough knowledge of their operations including strengths and weaknesses;
- Initiates contact with the Plant Manager and drivers on a regular basis to optimize customer service levels and safety;
- Manages logistics coordinators within designated region to ensure standard transportation processes are followed;
- Responsible for performance management, training, vacation coverage requests, and recruitment, for his team in conjunction with the plant managers; sales representatives and supervisors
- Participates and contributes to company safety program;
Qualifications
Required:
- 7+ years of Logistics/Transportation experience with a Bachelor’s degree –or– 10+ years of Logistics/Transportation experience with a HS Diploma
- Experience in forestry, lumber, or utility pole logistics – truck and rail.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Excellent leadership, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Willingness to travel up to 50%.
Preferred:
- Bilingual (English & French) — written and spoken.
- Familiarity with SAP TMS.
- Proven track record of leading national logistics functions.
