Employment and Labour Law Clerk
Responsibilities:
- Act as the go‑to person for 1 Partner and 2 associates, providing guidance and organizational and administrative support
- Draft correspondence, court documents, and pleadings, and assist with the preparation and filing of legal documents
- Manage and organize documents within the firm’s document management system (Clio)
- Manage multiple inboxes, multiple calendars, filing deadlines, scheduling meetings, and maintaining an organized system for legal documents and case files
- Communicating professionally and effectively with clients, opposing counsel, and court offices
- Reviewing and analyzing legal documents for accuracy and compliance in accordance with the Rules
- Prepare, review and process client invoices for the Partner and 2 associates (management side only)
- Assist the Partner with operational responsibilities such as delegation of work, supervision of students and clerks, organizing, planning Firm events, and marketing
- Managing and assisting the Partner with other duties as required to ensure that their practice is running smoothly
- Ability to anticipate next steps in with files and maintain an effective bring forward system to ensure matters proceed to next steps in timely manner
- Handle office and file organization tasks
Requirements:
- 3-5 years’ experience as a law clerk in a boutique law firm setting (labour and employment law is an asset)
- Proficiency with the Rules of Civil Procedure, Rules of the Small Claims Court (Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario Rules, Ontario Labour Relations Board is an asset)
- Strong work ethic and attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills with the ability to multitask, anticipate needs, and prioritize effectively
- Ability to work well independently with minimal supervision as well as in a team setting
- Proficient in MS Office Suite
- Experience with Clio or similar document management and file‑opening software
- 4 days in office/1-day WFH
- Ideal candidate thrives on being busy, self-sufficient, highly organized with the ability to multi-task; doesn’t need handholding; takes initiative and is proactive and forward thinking when it comes to knowing lawyers’ files and deadlines. Candidate should be able to grasp things quickly with confidence and little instruction
