Role Description

This is a full-time, on-site position for a Junior Associate Lawyer at Bajwa Law Firm in Toronto, Ontario.

We are seeking a motivated and reliable junior lawyer with at least one year of criminal law experience, particularly experience handling bail matters and in-custody files. The successful candidate will work closely with senior counsel while also managing their own carriage of matters, including regular court appearances, client interaction, legal drafting, negotiations with Crown counsel, and litigation preparation.

This position is ideal for a lawyer looking to build strong courtroom experience in a fast-paced criminal defence practice. The ideal candidate is organized, confident appearing before the court, able to work under pressure, and committed to providing high-quality advocacy and client service.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct bail hearings, remands, and other criminal court appearances
  • Draft bail plans, release proposals, motions, legal submissions, and correspondence
  • Meet with clients in and out of custody and provide legal advice
  • Conduct legal research and assist with trial preparation and litigation strategy
  • Communicate and negotiate with Crown counsel and court staff
  • Manage assigned files independently while working collaboratively with the litigation team
  • Ensure compliance with court deadlines and procedural requirements

Qualifications

  • Minimum one year of criminal law experience
  • Prior experience conducting bail hearings is strongly preferred
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
  • Strong oral advocacy, negotiation, and communication skills
  • Excellent legal research and drafting abilities
  • Ability to manage multiple files in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong professionalism, judgment, and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Compensation

  • Salary: $60,000–$70,000 annually, depending on experience
  • Profit-sharing opportunities available based on performance and contribution to the firm
