Description
WHO WE ARE
Datamtx ( / formerly Datamatics) established in 1993 is globally HQ’d in Atlanta with a stellar history supporting both OEM’s such as IBM, Oracle, Microsoft, Adobe, Infor, etc along with leading NOC’s, Distributors (Eg,. Arrow Electronics, Synnex, etc) for both professional services and team augmentation services.
THE ROLE
We have an existing client with a need for a Omnissa VDI Lead Engineer or Architect for a 2 phased delivery.
We are ok wit hpart-time candidates in case bandwidth is an issue (eg. 20 hours per week, etc).
We estimate 180-200 hours of work. 100% remote.
The Client operates an Omnissa Horizon virtual desktop environment experiencing recurring performance issues, including black screens, random disconnects, slow session responsiveness, and inconsistent user experience—most frequently impacting Dell Wyse ThinOS endpoints. The environment was originally implemented under accelerated timelines and lacks a fully documented architecture, validated performance baselines, and end-to-end monitoring.
The Client has requested to engage the Consultant to conduct a structured Phase 1 initiative consisting of:
· A comprehensive architecture and configuration review of the Horizon environment
· Full-stack discovery across compute, storage, networking, GPU-backed workloads, profiles, UAG/LB, App Volumes, and endpoints
· Targeted ControlUp configuration review, tuning, and operational alignment (platform assumed pre-deployed)
· Windows 11 image assessment and optimization review
· Delivery of a comprehensive documentation package including findings and recommendations
· Training and knowledge transfer for Customer technical staff
· A prioritized roadmap for Phase 2 remediation and modernization
· Evaluation of Phase 1 findings to determine if a complete environment rebuild and migration is warranted as part of future project phase(s).
This SOW covers both:
· Phase 1: Review, Documentation, Recommendations, Stabilization, and Image Assessment. A separate SOW will define Phase 2: Remediation & Re-Architecture.
· Phase 2: Objectives and activities to be defined based on discovery and findings during Phase 1 and the scope, sequencing, and execution of remediation activities under this. Phase 2 SOW will be driven exclusively by the Phase 1 assessment deliverables and agreed-upon priorities.
Phase 2 is intended to deliver measurable improvements to the Horizon environment while minimizing operational risk through controlled pilot testing and phased deployment.
2.1 Project Objectives (Phase 1)
o Establish a complete understanding of the Customer’s current Omnissa Horizon design, configuration, and supporting infrastructure
o Identify and validate root causes contributing to performance degradation, black screens, disconnect events, and inconsistent EUX
o Leverage existing ControlUp telemetry and perform targeted tuning to support troubleshooting and root-cause analysis
o Assess existing Windows 11 base images for performance, stability, and Horizon alignment
o Deliver a comprehensive documentation package, including architecture diagrams, findings, and recommendations
o Provide training and knowledge transfer to Customer staff to support ongoing operations and future-state planning
2.2 Project Objectives (Phase 2)
o Remediate the highest-impact issues identified and validated in Phase 1
o Improve Horizon session stability, performance, and user experience
o Reduce endpoint-related incidents where feasible within scope
o Validate changes through pilot testing prior to broader deployment
o Establish a stable operational baseline for subsequent modernization phases
3) DTMX Responsibilities
3.1 In-Scope Activities (Phase 1)
A. Omnissa Horizon Environment Review
The Consultant will perform a technical assessment of the Horizon environment, including:
· Architecture, topology, and pool configuration review (Instant Clone vs. Full Clone discovered during assessment)
· Evaluation of persistent and non-persistent desktop models with modernization recommendations
· Review of GPU-backed workloads, resource allocation, and driver/configuration alignment
· Analysis of persona/profile management (DEM, GPOs, user containers, FSLogix if applicable)
· Assessment of App Volumes configuration, entitlements, packaging workflows, and operational processes
· Review of image management, snapshots, update workflows, and golden image hygiene
· Endpoint analysis (Dell Wyse ThinOS, Horizon Client, Horizon Browser Access)
· Review of UAG configuration, Netscaler load balancing, MFA posture, Zero Trust considerations, remote access workflows
· ESXi host, vCenter, compute, storage, cluster design, and performance assessment
· Identification of factors contributing to black screens, disconnects, login storms, degraded graphics performance, USB/Teams issues, and session instability
B. ControlUp Review & Optimization
The Consultant will review the existing ControlUp deployment and perform configuration tuning and operational alignment activities. ControlUp is assumed to be fully deployed and operational prior to the engagement by ControlUp or the Client.
In-scope activities include: – Review of existing ControlUp configuration and integrations – Policy and threshold tuning based on observed Horizon behavior – Dashboard refinement aligned to Horizon operational and troubleshooting workflows – Validation of alerts and telemetry relevance – Use of ControlUp data to support discovery, analysis, and findings
The Consultant is not responsible for ControlUp platform deployment, licensing, collector installation, or ongoing platform administration.
C. Windows 11 Image Review & Optimization Assessment
The Consultant will perform a structured review of existing Windows 11 images used within the Horizon environment, including:
· Review of base image configuration and build methodology
· Assessment of performance-impacting settings and EUX alignment
· Identification of image sprawl, one-off builds, and technical debt
· Review of update, snapshot, and image lifecycle workflows
· Validation of alignment with Omnissa Horizon best practices
Deliverables will include image findings and recommendations for standardization, optimization, and future golden image strategy.
This activity does not include full image rebuilds or mass remediation unless explicitly authorized under a separate SOW.
D. Documentation & Recommendations
(No material change, except references updated to include image findings and ControlUp tuning summary)
E. Training & Knowledge Transfer
Training will focus on: – Interpretation of ControlUp dashboards and alerts – Review of Windows 11 image findings – Operational best practices based on assessment results – Phase 2 roadmap walkthrough
3.2 In-Scope Activities (Phase 2)
A. Phase 1 Findings Review & Prioritization
· Review Phase 1 assessment findings and recommendations
· Jointly prioritize remediation items based on:
