We are seeking an experienced Patent Agent with strong expertise in wireless communications and the 3GPP standards ecosystem to join our growing team.

The Opportunity

As a Patent Agent at Harfang IP, you will work directly with inventors, engineers, patent attorneys, and licensing professionals to identify, develop, and protect valuable wireless technology inventions.

The ideal candidate combines strong patent drafting and prosecution skills with a deep technical understanding of cellular technologies and 3GPP standards development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct sessions with inventors and technical subject matter experts.
  • Draft high-quality patent applications covering advanced wireless communications technologies.
  • Manage and support global patent prosecution activities.
  • Evaluate invention disclosures and perform patentability assessments.
  • Analyze emerging developments within 3GPP and identify opportunities for patent creation.
  • Work closely with engineers to align patent strategy with evolving technology and standards roadmaps.
  • Assist in the development and management of standards-essential patent portfolios.
  • Conduct prior art and competitive patent landscape reviews.
  • Support licensing, due diligence, acquisition, and portfolio evaluation activities.
  • Monitor industry and standards trends relevant to Harfang IP’s strategic initiatives.

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Patent Agent in Canada and/or the United States.
  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of patent drafting and prosecution experience.
  • Strong technical background in wireless communications systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of 3GPP standards, including LTE and 5G NR.
  • Experience drafting patent applications in complex technical domains.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with standards-essential patents (SEPs).
  • Familiarity with 3GPP working groups and standards contributions.
  • Experience supporting patent licensing or portfolio monetization initiatives.
