Role Overview: We are seeking Mid-Level Tax Litigation Lawyer (4–8 years of experience) to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will:

  • Represent clients in all stages of tax disputes and litigation, from initial CRA audits through to appeals and Tax Court / Federal Court.
  • Conduct legal research, draft pleadings and submissions, and appear before Tax Court / Federal Court, where appropriate.
  • Provide strategic advice to clients on complex tax matters, working closely with senior team members or leading teams (depending on your level).
  • Collaborate with colleagues on case strategy, negotiation, and settlement discussions.
  • Assist with business development activities such as client presentations, seminars, and networking events.

Responsibilities:

  • Case Management: Manage a portfolio of tax litigation files under the supervision of senior lawyers, while mentoring junior associates.
  • Strategic Planning: Develop case strategy, prepare detailed submissions, and argue in Tax Court / Federal Court, where applicable.
  • Client Counseling: Advise clients on legal risks, potential outcomes, and strategic options to resolve or mitigate tax disputes.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with senior lawyers on complex files; supervise and review the work of junior lawyers.

Qualifications:

  • Education: LL.B. or J.D. degree from an accredited law school; member in good standing of a Canadian law society.
  • Technical Skills: Proven knowledge of Canadian tax laws and regulations. Strong research, analytical, and drafting abilities. Familiarity with Tax Court / Federal Court procedures related to tax disputes.
  • Soft Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to manage competing priorities and tight deadlines effectively. Strong interpersonal and client-facing skills. Team player with a proactive attitude and attention to detail.

Compensation: Base salary of $110,000 (2022 call) to $190,000 (2018 call) for a 1,200 billable hour target. The firm may, in its discretion, award a bonus for hours billed above target, generally in the range of $20,000 to $25,000 per each additional 100 hours. Any bonus is discretionary and not guaranteed.
